Salary packaging helps NFP employees increase their take-home pay, making their salaries more competitive. Many of our customers see it as a key reason to stay in the sector.
-
It’s easy to start salary packaging and save money with CBB. Here’s what you need to do:
- Check with your pay office that CBB is the official salary packaging provider for your organisation.
- Visit our online booking page to arrange an appointment with one of our friendly consultants. We can organise everything over the phone, then email you the paperwork you need to begin saving tax.
- Sign the forms we prepare for you and return these together with any further documentation we may need. Then we’ll create your salary packaging account!
- Start saving tax and see your take home pay increase by 5 – 10%.
-
The Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) year commences on 1 April and ends on 31 March each year. This is different to the financial year which begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June.
-
You’ll find that salary packaging won’t affect the way that you complete your tax return. The only additional step that you will need to do is include your reportable fringe benefit amount (which appears in your payment summary) on your tax return.
-
If you need to change the amount of one of your regular payments just complete a new regular payment form. This is available on the Resources page or by calling CBB Salary Packaging on 1300 763 505.
-
Yes, it is possible to change the way your salary packaging money is allocated. See ‘How do I change the amount of my regular payment?’ above. You can also change the amount of your salary packaging deductions. All you need to do is give CBB a call on 1300 763 505 or complete the necessary forms available on the Resources page.
-
If you need to set up a new regular payment, simply complete a Request a payment form (available on the Resources page) and email it to customercare@cbb.com.au along with proof of debt. Alternatively, you can contact our Customer Care Team for assistance on 1300 763 505.

-
Statements are available through this website by logging in to your CBB account. You should also receive an automated account statement via email each week, fortnight or month (depending on your salary packaging cycle). If you are not receiving these statements, please call our team on 1300 763 505.
Salary Packaging
-
Salary packaging, also known as salary sacrifice, is an arrangement where a portion of your salary is used to pay for benefits before tax is deducted. This reduces your taxable income, which can boost your take-home pay.
-
Employees working for organisations registered as Public Benevolent Institutions (PBIs) with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) are eligible for salary packaging.
-
To qualify as a PBI, an organisation must:
- Meet the legal definition of a charity
- Have a primary purpose of providing benevolent relief, such as assisting those in poverty or distress
- Deliver its own services or engage others to deliver them
- Demonstrate that its services provide a significant benefit to the community
-
Employees of eligible organisations can package up to $15,900 per annum in tax-free benefits. These benefits may include:
- Tax-free meals, holiday accommodation, and venue hire
- Novated vehicle leasing
- Electronic devices (such as laptops, phones, and tablets)
- Remote area housing benefits and travel claims (for eligible employees)
- Discounted airline lounge memberships
- Special discounts and offers through CBB partners
-
By paying for certain expenses with pre-tax dollars, salary packaging lowers your taxable income. This means you pay less tax overall, which increases your take-home pay.
-
If your employer is eligible, you can start salary packaging through CBB. Simply get in touch with our team to set up an account and begin enjoying the benefits.
-
Yes, you can update or change your salary packaging arrangements at no extra cost.
-
If your organisation is a charity but isn’t yet a PBI, you may be able to apply for PBI status through the ACNC Charity Portal. Once approved, the ATO will endorse your organisation, enabling you to offer salary packaging to employees.
-
When you use salary packaging, the money you spend on approved benefits is taken out of your income before tax is calculated. This means you pay tax on a lower amount of your salary. However, the value of these benefits is still shown on your income statement as a Reportable Fringe Benefits Amount (RFBA).
Even though this RFBA isn’t taxed, the government uses it to help work out other income tests, like whether you need to repay HECS-HELP, or if you qualify for Family Assistance or Child Care Subsidies.
-
No—you don’t. Whether you work full time, part time, or casually, if you pay income tax, you could benefit from salary packaging.
-
For more details on salary packaging and how it can benefit you, contact our helpful customer service team on 1300 763 505.

Every time you change your packaging amount, CBB will contact your pay office and deductions will be actioned subject to employer approvals and constraints.
-
Salary Packaging may or may not impact your family assistance payments from Centrelink.
You must declare your reportable fringe benefit along with your taxable income when your income is being assessed. Our Customer Care Team will be able to prepare a salary packaging analysis that you can give to Centrelink. Call 1300 763 505 or send an enquiry to customercare@cbb.com.au.
If you are unsure about anything, we recommend you speak to a Centrelink representative and or seek independent financial advice.
-
As the $2,650 benefit is reportable (grossed-up reportable amount of $5,000), it will increase your total assessable income. This could impact the calculation for repayment of the HECS/HELP/SFSS debt and the repayment may increase. To ensure your HECS/HELP/SFSS deduction is enough you are welcome to contact our Customer Care Team on 1300 763 505 or send an enquiry to customercare@cbb.com.au.
We suggest you contact your financial advisor for advice where required.
Novated Leasing
-
Novated leasing is a popular, tax-effective way to finance a car. It’s a three-way agreement between you, your employer, and a finance provider, where your employer deducts the lease payments from your pre-tax salary—lowering your taxable income and reducing your overall tax burden.
-
You choose the vehicle and agree on the lease terms, which typically include bundled running costs such as fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration, and servicing. Your employer then makes the lease payments from your pre-tax income, making the process straightforward and convenient.
-
The key benefits include substantial tax savings by using your pre-tax income, access to discounts on fuel, servicing, and insurance, and GST savings on the purchase price. Additionally, many packages offer fuel card discounts and special rates on electric vehicles, making car ownership both affordable and environmentally friendly.
-
In most cases, a novated lease covers all running costs—including fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration, and servicing—so you benefit from a single, manageable monthly payment that simplifies budgeting and keeps your expenses in check.
-
Absolutely. A novated lease provides the flexibility to use your car for both work and personal purposes, and you can even allow other drivers to use it. Plus, you get to choose the car that best fits your lifestyle.
-
It’s subject to approval by the financier of course, but yes, as long as you can comfortably make repayments, there are no limits on the make or model of the car you prefer. You can choose a new or used car through a dealership (and save GST) or a used car from a private seller or the one you are currently driving.
Some employers prefer that their employees don’t lease luxury vehicles, so have a chat with us and we’ll speak with them.
-
The ATO are particular about this, you’ll be leasing the vehicle therefore there is a residual value at the end of the lease term. When you get to the end of the lease, you’ll have a range of options to finalise the lease. You can pay the residual amount and own the car outright, refinance the residual and extend the lease, sell the car, pay the residual and start a new lease or trade the car in and start a new lease.
We’ll be there for you to talk through your options.
-
Simply contact CBB for a personalised quote. We’ll work directly with your employer to handle all the necessary paperwork, ensuring a smooth, stress-free process so you can quickly start enjoying the benefits.
-
We offer an easy-to-use novated leasing calculator that lets you input your details to see exactly how much you could save each month. It’s a great tool to demonstrate the boost to your take-home pay and overall affordability of your new vehicle.

End of Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT)
-
The Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) year commences on 1 April and ends on 31 March each year. This is different to the financial year which begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June.
-
ATO guidelines state that your salary packaging account and any cards (CBB Salary Packaging Card and/or CBB Meal Entertainment and Holiday Accommodation Card) should have a zero balance before 31 March each year.
-
If you do not have a zero balance by 31 March, the amount you can salary package in the following FBT year may be reduced, as any money left on the card will be carried over to the following FBT year. This could affect your regular payments made from your salary packaging, such as your home loan or rental payments (if you have them paid from your salary packaging funds).
For example, if you have a CBB Meal Entertainment and Holiday Accommodation Card with a balance of $650 at the end of the 2020 FBT year, the amount you can package onto your card in the following 2021 FBT year is $2,000, rather than the maximum benefit amount of $2,650.
It is more beneficial for you to have a zero balance on your salary packaging account/cards by 31 March each year, as this will enable you to package the maximum benefit available to you in the following FBT year. This means more savings, and more money in your pocket.
-
You can check your salary packaging account balance by:
- Logging in to CBB’s customer login area
- Referring to your most recent statement, or
- Phoning our Customer Care Team on 1300 763 505.
Please note: CBB does not have access to CBB Salary Packaging Card and CBB Meal Entertainment and Holiday Accommodation Card balances.
-
If your salary packaging funds are reimbursed to your bank account or paid to a home loan, personal loan, credit card, rent, etc., then your salary packaging account is regarded as having a zero balance. There is nothing further that you need to do at the end of the FBT year.
-
