(Abbreviation taken from Australia National Audit Office Better Practice Guide, May 1999).
The Board or Management Committee is responsible for effective Governance of its organisation. Governance is the action of directing and controlling an organisation.
When community organisations invest in Board governance programs they build a sustainable framework and culture within which they can enhance personal, team (Board) and organisational performance through a process that develops an understanding of roles and responsibilities and accentuates the building of strong performance and conformance outcomes.
In doing so, they build capability that will enable them to “direct” rather than “manage” the organisation and achieve very positive outcomes in the key result areas* of;
- Setting and monitoring strategic direction.
- Monitoring key organisational and Board performance and results.
- Setting strategic and Board-level policy.
- Ensuring accountability to stakeholders
